What exactly is in a Silipint? What are they made from?
Silipints are made of 100% food-grade silicone, meaning they’re a
rubber-like product composed of four elements: silicon, carbon, hydrogen and
oxygen. Creating Silipints involves a process similar to that of glass, using
primarily silicon, the second most abundant element on earth (after oxygen).
Found in sand, quartz and rock, the silicon is then bonded with small amounts
of oxygen, carbon and hydrogen, creating the extremely useful material: silicone.
Petroleum products and precious metals aren’t found in Silipints. In
other words, Silipints are not plastic.
Since
silicone is an inert material, it does not react with food or beverages nor
does it produce any hazardous toxins. Silicone is BPA free, 100% food-grade
approved by the FDA, and can withstand temperatures ranging from -150∘F to
600∘ F. Dang.
Are
Silipints eco-friendly?
Silipints
are most definitely eco-friendly because they can be reused, over and over
again, preventing overflowing garbage cans and substantially reducing the
wastes involved with the production and transportation of any new products.
Plus, since they won’t break, Silipints further reduce waste, a claim that
other drinkware simply can’t make (yes, glass, we’re looking at you!). Our
motto around here: Reduce, Reuse, Rehydrate!
But what
about Recycle?! Great question. Silipints
are indeed recyclable, though not yet in curbside pickups. Silipint, Inc is
so committed to the environment that we’ll pay the shipping on any Silipint
needing recycling, to ensure that it arrives safely to one of the US-based
silicone recycling facilities and is carefully turned into new silicone
products (from bake ware to medicine, lubricants to computer chips). But again,
it’s hard to imagine a situation in which someone would actually want to
recycle their Silipints, since they are, after all, unbreakable, reusable and
totally awesome!
How long do Silipints really last?
Silicone
has roughly the same half life as glass, meaning, they’ll be here a lot longer
than you or I will. You can simply assume that Silipints, unless recycled properly,
will last forever. Fortunately, if you drop one while out camping, you won’t
have to worry about your Silipint shattering into 50 pieces, all of which will
be there for just as long as your fully-functional Silipint (again, glass,
we’re looking at you!).
Are Silipints safe?
Yes. Silipints are FDA-approved, BPA-free, and non-toxic; they’re 100%
safe. We’re talking about the same material that is found in baby bottle sippy
lids – super safe. Silipints will not support the growth of fungus, mold or
bacteria either. And, did we mention, they won’t break or cut you (glass, I
think it’s time for you to leave).
